Ye Rambling Boys of Pleasure

When I was twelve years old, I was gifted a compilation tape that had belonged to my friend’s late father. This song was one of my favorites, my first encounter with the band Planxty and with the singing of Andy Irvine. The song is also linked to Northern singers Sam Henry, Robert Cinnamond and Joe Holmes, though the melody and lyrics are altered, as is the nature with the aural tradition. This beautiful tale of love, change and longing is believed to have formed the basis of W.B. Yates' poem 'Down by the Sally Gardens'.
