Fare Thee well Lovely Nancy

I first learned of this song from my father. It is a sea shanty from the English singing tradition. Historically the song was collected by Perthshire born Dr George Gardiner, from George Lovett, in Hampshire, towards the end of the 19th century. Cecil Sharp also collected a version, this time in Somerset, from a lady called Susan Williams in 1905. My own interest in the sea comes from a childhood spent sailing on Lough Neagh, the largest lake in the British Isles, and my belief that the touring musicians of today have an affinity with the sailors of the past...
